Your writing course at Arvon, Lumb Bank

Hello – I’m John-Paul. I’m one of the teachers at the Arvon course you signed up for in November.

The other teacher is my brilliant and prize-winning friend Alice Jolly.

We’re also privileged to have Amy Liptrot joining us.

I recorded this video to give you a sense of who I am, and as promised in the video I’m putting here a few links to my work, so you can read it if you like. No obligation (obviously).

Probably the best book to give you an overall sense of me as I am today is my latest – a novel:

It includes a certain amount about HOW I wrote it – quite an unusual process.

I’ve also co-written a practical workbook for people who want to tell their family story, with my wife (another journalist):

(In both cases, you can find out more by clicking on the picture.)

Stories I’ve written about family, for newspapers and magazines, include: “I told them to be brave” (for The Guardian), “They say I’ll dance again” (for the Sunday Times).

By their nature, the stories I write about families for newspapers tend to be a bit bleak.

For something that focuses on the domestic without being dark, you might want to read a chapter I wrote for a book published just this week (20 Oct 2017).

I’ve created a PDF, so you can print it off and read at leisure:

Now, please leave a comment in the box below, telling me where you are in your writing career, and what you want to get out of the course.

PS.> I’m serious! I’d love to hear from you. Pop a comment in the box now. It won’t appear on Facebook (unless you choose that option).
